Alverta & Tye ready for the Golden Jubilee
June 19, 2010
On a perfect English summer day, Leah guides Alverta through her final workout before the Golden Jubilee Stakes.
In England, it's now the eve of Alverta’s appearance at Royal Ascot in the Golden Jubilee Stakes G1. The outcome now rests with Alverta and jockey Tye Angland who will both need to produce career-best performances to foot it with some of the world's best sprinters and riders.
The Golden Jubilee Stakes will be televised live in Australia on Sky and TVN at 12:50 am AEST, tomorrow, Sunday 20 June.
Stable Manager Alice Minter reports that Alverta has improved considerably since the arduous 45-hour trip from Scone, NSW to Newmarket, Suffolk, and has regained much of the 40kg she lost during her journey.
Alice says, "Paul has had the challenge of adapting her work at home to the endless and initially unfamiliar Newmarket training tracks here at Newmarket. He's deliberately varied her work, giving her fresh challenges each day to keep her interested. This has helped Alverta to settle in her new environment, she's been eager to work every day and loves running out on the heath with her groom and rider Leah."
Drawn barrier 18, Alverta will take her place in a field of 24 outstanding sprinters. Her rivals include the brilliant English mare Fleeting Spirit (barrier 21), former crack Australian colt Starspangledbanner (barrier 4), now prepared by Irish training genius Aidan O'Brien, America's proven international performer Kinsale King (barrier 9), boom three-year-old Showcasing (barrier 7), the race favourite at $7. There's also keen Australian and Arrowfield interest in Hong Kong star Happy Zero (by Danzero) and Fravashi (by former Arrowfield sire Falbrav).
With the Golden Jubilee Stakes now only hours away, Paul's work to prepare Alverta is almost complete. What remains are the fascinating uncertainties of the race itself.
Alice says, "The big question is how the race will play out, as English race tactics are very different to those in Australia. Will we get the speed we hope for? Will the field split? Is the stand side or the rail side faster? Should we go straight or split?"
These are the decisions Tye Angland will face tomorrow as he and Alverta set out on the final six furlongs of their Royal Ascot campaign. As they begin their ascent up that daunting course before a crowd of 80,000 racegoers, we'll be hoping that the gods of racing are flying with them.
